La cueva del contrabando

THE SMUGGLER’S STORY

 “Since I’ve been able to talk and listen to my parents, I’ve been fascinated by the ‘Cueva del Contrabando’.  The smuggler’s cave.

 Within this cave lies the spirit of my grandfather and his forefathers.

My grandfather was convicted of smuggling in the late 1940’s.  Lots of fishermen were.  It was the only way of earning enough to keep his large family fed.

These men risked their lives and liberty, undercover of darkness in the often threatening sea and rocks surrounding Tossa de mar.  Offloading Tobacco from ships and hiding it in secret caves.

Last year in 2005, my father finally showed me the entrance.  I can’t explain the emotions of entering and climbing inside this historical cavern.

A lot of that first journey was done in darkness, it was a fascinating experience.
